LAS VEGAS, NEVADA — The Dental Board of California voted at their noticed meeting on Friday, November 15, 2019 for immediate acceptance of the American Board of Dental Examiners (ADEX) dental licensure examination for California dental licensure without further need for promulgating regulations. This will allow dental candidates passing the ADEX dental examination from this meeting date forward to pursue the pathway to dental licensure in California. This was a culmination of a multi-year process of working with the California Dental Board and the California legislature toward this implementation.

“We were pleased to present and respond to questions from the California board members to ensure their understanding of and confidence in the development and administration of the ADEX Dental Licensure Examination,” said ADEX President William G. Pappas, D.D.S. “ADEX has pursued its mission and brings a uniform national dental examination for licensure, and shares a commitment with the California Dental Board to provide the most ethical examination process possible for the patients receiving care as part of the examination process, which was the mandate for the ADEX developed Patient Centered Curriculum Integrated Format,” added Guy Shampaine, D.D.S., former CEO of ADEX and longtime advocate for a uniform national examination in dentistry.

“With 46 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands now accepting the ADEX Dental Examination for licensure, it is very much a reality that dentistry, like other health professions in the United States, could see one uniform national examination very soon,” said Dr. Pappas.

The development of the licensure application process will take approximately 4-6 months to implement.
